EMBC Ministry of Deacons

"Let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For which is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? ... I am among you as one who serves."  -

By very definition, deacons are servants. The word “Deacon” is derived from a Greek word best translated “servant”. Most people think of deacons as capable leaders and rightly so. For by dying for us, Christ Jesus set the ultimate example of leadership by servitude.

Deacons serve Christ by serving the local church and assisting our Pastor. Deacons are at the forefront in preserving unity and harmony within the church body or family fellowship.

Our Purpose

The purpose of a Deacon(ess) is to serve as a caretaker to the angel God has set in their midst. We serve to stand with the Pastor and help him fulfill the God given vision. Each member of the Deacon(ess) Ministries has varied responsibilities to the Pastor and his family as well his office and the pulpit committee at large.

Our Commitment

The New Testament identifies two offices of the local church. The pastor/overseer and the deacon/elder. The term deacon comes from the Greek word meaning "to serve" or "servant."  In the early church, Acts, chapter 6, seven men were selected to assist the apostles as they led the emerging church in ministry.  These seven men became the prototypes of the modern deacons. Because no comprehensive list of responsibilities exists in the New Testament defining the tasks of deacons, these elected servants have served in a variety of ways.

At EMBC, deacons are elected to serve along with the pastor and staff as a ministering body rather than a governing body.
